Once upon a time I'd write memorable rhymes, We'd gather round the furnace and sing for our goddamned lives. Sometimes we'd drink ourselves to death, sometimes we'd get high, But we never lost a night's sleep for that time that passed us by. Now we've got centuries of guns and glory Piled high beneath our feet that make it easier to see. But unfortunately, our enemies have got a great view of us From high up in the trees. We're not taking chances on olive branches So you had best prepare to fight.... I'm gonna drink my way across the world and go to war, The barkeeps speak in tongues but they know just what the liquor's for. I'm gonna drink my way across the world and go to war, My veins are soaked in rum, but I'll take another three or four. For shit's sake, it doesn't seem that I believe in sleep. I'd just like to dream for once about something I can keep. And I know this rifle in my hand's all that's keeping me from God. But Satan's got an arms race going with the bearded man above. So hopefully I can hang somewhere in between Find myself a decent job, spend my weekends at the beach. To stay put in one place isn't all that much to ask, But going round the world and coming back is quite the task. We're not taking chances on olive branches, So you had best prepare to fight.... I'm gonna drink my way across the world and go to war The barkeeps speak in tongues but they know just what the liquor's for. I'm gonna drink my way across the world and go to war, My veins are soaked in rum, but I'll take another three or four.

For the first time in a hundred years the rain had ceased to fall I have no idea at all if this is true or just something I’ve been told But whether the weather was or wasn’t any wetter, I was certain right then it couldn’t get much better I started walking my way downtown with no fear of the cold The sun shown out so bright that day I head towards the waterway And the big old crowd was shouting right out loud This is what the had to say: Stop I know that the weather may be pretty But you can swim in the river if you’re south of the city And the bridge is almost out You better check it out If you ever want to get downtown. Well at two decades old with nothing to lose I rolled up my sleeves and kicked off my shoes Jumped in the river and swam for the opposite shore And the current was strong the river was wide But I’d never sleep knowing I never tried I could not live my life in fear of what may be in store As I reached the banks and began to dry I laughed to myself with a peace of mind As I caught glimpse of the warning sign with all those things I’ve heard before Stop I know that the weather may be pretty But you can swim in the river if you’re south of the city And the bridge is almost out You better check it out If you ever want to get downtown. All too often we are likely to assume All the things we read and hear have to be true In the end the only truth lies with you Which side of the river will you be on When the crowd comes after you
